by Joanne Centa Cincinnati-More than 250 people came to the University of Cincinnati's Zimmer Auditorium on October 16 to hear Candace Gingrich-Human Rights Campaign spokesperson and renowned half-sister of the infamous House Speaker Newt-deliver an hour-long address on her coming out and the importance of being politically aware and active.
Sponsored by UC's Alliance of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual People, the event featured the reading of a proclamation by Mayor Roxanne Qualls declaring Wednesday, October 16 "Candace Gingrich Day" in Cincinnati. The pronouncement was met by cheers and applause from the audience as Gingrich took the podium.
Gingrich humorously described how she came out, first to herself, then to her family and friends, and then finally-by virtue of Newt's political rise to the nation. She read from her book The Accidental Activist and spoke of how she changed from being "apathetic, complacent and blissfully ignorant" to the national spokesperson and author she is today. From out of almost nowhere, in, 1995, she was named Ms. magazine's "Woman of the Year," and one of Esquire magazine's "Women We Love Most."
House of Representatives-that she became politically involved. (The hate crime act requires the FBI to compile statistics on hate-motivated crimes, including anti-gay ones.)
Claiming that her book would be more appropriately called "The Accidental Reactivist," Gingrich said, “No one sets out to be an activist-what usually happens to people is that some spark occurs, and you react to it, and so you are actually a reactivist."
Gingrich also stressed the importance of being "at least somewhat aware" of the candidates as well as the issues, and that "voting is no longer a privilege, but a duty and an obligation."
Noting that voters are often faced with choosing between the lesser oftwo (or three) evils, she asked the audience to look for and support "the fair-minded candidate."
"And, in 1996, that candidate is Bill Clinton," she added. She expressed the fact that even though Clinton has not been perfect, gays and lesbians still have never had it better in the history of the United States, and that Clinton is by far the most fair-minded candidate in the race. She also pointed out that it is likely that Clinton, if reelected, will appoint one or two new Supreme Court Justices within the next four years-"and we wouldn't want another Scalia, or Clarence Thomas, would we?"
Before ending the upbeat evening with questions from the floor, she quoted Virginia Senator Chuck Robb, saying that when
